Social commitment
Sprache Verbindet - Language connects
Learning to understand and speak German "easily".
Speaking German is an important prerequisite for success at school and at work. We help children from immigrant families to learn the German language - if possible still at nursery school age, so that they can understand the teachers when they start school.
Our language scouts (mostly high school students) visit the 4- to 10-year-old children at home once or twice a week. Learning German is almost incidental and a lot of fun. The scout receives 4 euros per hour from the family and 6 euros from the Rotary Club. A sponsor accompanies the first visit and meets with the scout every three months for feedback and accounting. The scouts are prepared for their task in three different Saturday workshops. They get to know other cultures, make new friends, gain educational experience and receive a certificate for their social commitment.
Project leader Jürgen Schwerter was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon for this in 2016.
